Article: New Research Shows Students are Largely Unaware of News Personalization

Mediashift recently posted this article titled "New Research Shows Students are Largely Unaware of News Personalization". I have found that adults are largely unaware too, or if they're aware they may not understand how it actually works. I recommend you take a minute to read the article and include it in class discussion, if possible.

Follow hashtags with #tagboard

Richard Byrne at Free Tech 4 Teachers created a short tutorial video on how to use Tagboard to follow hashtags on a variety of social media.

If you use the site on an FISD filtered computer or wi-fi, if you are logged in to the filter, you will see results for Twitter, Google+ and Flickr but results for Facebook, Instagram and Vine may be blocked. If you use the site from home or on your data plan, you should see results for all of those platforms.

Try searching for these popular Educational hashtags:

Monica Lewinsky's TED Talk on Social Media and Public Shaming

In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become constant -- and can turn deadly. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs, and demands a different way.

Hashtag How Tos - Figure, Configure, Follow, Find, + Find Others

If you're like most teachers out there, you could use some help making sense of #hashtags. They're not just for Twitter anymore; they're showing up all over the place! Check out this handy article: Hashtag How Tos - Figure, Configure, Follow, Find, + Find Others.

The article tells you how to find helpful hashtags using tools like Hashtagify.me and comparing the popularity of different hashtags using tools like topsy.com. Some of these resources are currently blocked on the FISD filter so it would be best to access them using your data plan or at a non-FISD filtered location.

Knowing how to use #hashtags can be a huge help in your professional growth and online professional community development.
